Recording Philosophy
The genres of music we record are best served by using the finest recording equipment, minimalist recording techniques, and experienced well-trained ears for capturing the proper musical balance during the recording process.  While good equipment is important for optimizing the sonic quality of audio capture, nothing is more crucial than having a recording engineer possessing both extensive recording experience and the musical knowledge and sensitivity to enable effective collaboration with the artist.  Our approach to recording varies based on the acoustics of the venue, repertoire and instrumentation, but in all cases, we record in a way that best serves the artist and the music.

We have audio editing capabilities that are precise to within a thousandth of a second.  Even though it is usually preferable to employ minimal editing, our clients may take comfort in the fact that we can edit most anything completely seamlessly.  We also have the ability to apply tasteful reverberation, equalization, compression, and other digital manipulations to a recording, but we limit or avoid their use unless absolutely necessary.  Our aim is always to achieve a natural sound.

Because we insist on providing our clients with the highest quality product possible, we include post-production, editing and full mastering on every project, large or small.  We will never "hand you a CD" at the conclusion of your performance: we will always take the time to produce a recording you'll be proud to share with your friends and colleagues and listen to again and again.  All our clients receive the same attention to detail and fast turnaround service.

Equipment
Our recordings are made using DSD (Direct Stream Digital®) high resolution audio technology.  DSD provides 128 times higher resolution than standard CD audio and greatly enhances the depth and dynamic range in your recording, even when rendered to standard CD.

To capture great sound, there is no substitute for using great microphones.  TTL owns a collection of world-class German condenser microphones by Schoeps and Sennheiser, the same professional microphones used on many award-winning classical recordings on labels such as Telarc, Decca and Deutsche Grammophon.

  • Microphones: Schoeps CMC6 amplifiers (4) with matched pairs of MK21 wide cardioid, MK2S diffuse-field omni, and MK22 open cardioid capsules; Sennheiser MKH8020 free-field omni and MKH8040 cardioid (matched pairs of each)
  • Microphone preamplifiers: DAV Broadhurst Gardens, Benchmark MPS420 (4 channels), Soundcraft M Series (4 channels)
  • Digital recording processors: Korg MR-2000S and MR-1000 DSD recorders, Lucid AD9624 A/D converter, Tascam DR-680
  • Digital audio workstation: 2.66GHz Intel® Core 2 Duo
  • Software: Wavelab, Audiogate (DSD to PCM conversion), Altiverb convolution reverb
  • Monitoring interface: Benchmark DAC1-USB D/A converter
  • Monitoring speaker systems: NHT M-00, Vandersteen Model 2Ci
  • Monitoring headphones: Sennheiser HD600, Remote Audio High Noise Environment Headset (using Sony HN-7506 drivers)
